Advanced Placement (AP) Credit Policies at Ontario Universities

(Last updated and verified 2020-02-23)

Advanced Placement (AP) exams are available to high school students in a variety of subject areas. These exams are typically at the difficulty level of first year university courses, and therefore Ontario universities often award university level credit for earning high scores on these exams.

Most schools have an AP credit policy that states both the maximum number of university credits a student may earn through AP testing (often 2 – 3, but sometimes more) as well as the minimum score required to earn a university credit (usually a 4 or a 5 out of 5).

AP exams are offered once per year in May only at AP-participating high schools. In the Greater Toronto Area, Bronte College in Mississauga has been very welcoming to homeschoolers wishing to write AP exams.

High School Transfer Credits

Queen’s University may grant Transfer Credits to students coming from a number of different programs. Transfer credit assessment varies depending on the courses or curriculum that the student has completed, the student’s scores/grades achieved in that program, the Queen’s program that the student is entering, and the student’s year of entry to Queen’s.

[Example, choosing Arts and Science as the Program: ]
Arts and Science Advanced Placement (AP) Transfer Credits

A maximum of 18.0 credit units may be granted for Advanced Placement examinations passed with a grade of 4 or higher.

Queen’s Undergraduate Admission will assess students’ Advanced Placement courses to determine whether or not Queen’s credits can be granted. (There are some courses that will not be given Queen’s credit, regardless of a student’s score on the exam.)

To have these courses assessed, students must arrange to have official examination results in the form of the College Board AP Grade Report sent to Undergraduate Admission, using Queen’s institution code “0949”. Queen’s will not request these reports on a student’s behalf.

Exclusion is defined as a list of two or more courses that are considered similar enough that credit will only be given for a defined subset of courses from that list. Usually, holding credit for an excluded course(s) will prevent registration of the remaining courses on the list.

More information about the degree plan selection process and departmental thresholds for acceptance can be found on the Faculty of Arts and Science website.
